Atlantic City City Council passed a half dozen cannabis ordinances Wednesday — including a resolution supporting iAnthus’s application to become the first company to sell adult recreational weed in the seaside resort.
The company’s plans were first reported by N.J. Advance Media. The nine-member Council voted 8-1 to approve both a letter of support and resolution granting a license to MPX New Jersey, the firm iAnthus acquired earlier this year along with its medical marijuana license.
If final city and state approvals are met, city officials predict iAnthus can begin adult recreational weed sales at its medical dispensary on South New York Avenue within six months.
A handful of iAnthus representatives, including the firm’s attorney, Jill Ojserkis of Cooper Levenson, watched the 4 ½ hour hearing either online or in-person. Ojserkis stepped up to the podium briefly to tell City Council of iAnthus’s commitment to be a part of the city’s embrace of cannabis as an economic driver.
“We’re ready, iAnthus is ready,” Ojserkis told the nine-member panel.
Council then voted 8-1 to approve. The lone ‘no’ vote was Council member Aaron “Sporty” Randolph.
